This post is inspired by Seth Godin’s blog post yesterday where he asked:
“If you could make one thing come true that would change everything for your project, do you know what the one thing would be?”
So the one thing is actually a wish and he points out that most sites, companies, or ventures do not have or cannot articulate.
I’d like to change that from a wish to a purpose, from how you make a wish come true to how you fulfill the purpose. A Wish tends to be self-serving, while a purpose translates towards serving others.
As Seth puts it, Google’s big thing or wish is “’we need to be the place people come to search.’” And I would bet that Google’s big thing is more purpose driven than wishful thinking and it would go something like this: “we need to help people, no matter where they are, quickly find exactly what they are looking for no matter what it is or where it is.”
Wishes come and go and have a tendency to depend on others to make them come true. I believe a purpose increases self-drive, determination and perseverance to achieve a goal and those are things any project or venture needs to be successful.
Wishes end with the self – the effort ends once I am satisfied. Wishes also keep your idea confined to a box. A purpose lives on and expands to the changing need of those it serves. In Google’s case, what if I do not want to search? I just want to find what I need at the time I need it. Would Google’s “wish” or “big thing” as stated in Seth’s article had resulted in Google AdSense/AdWords services since I do not physically perform a search but rather served relevant ads? What about Google analytics and the slew of apps developed by Google Labs? A testimonial of how a service or product helped someone speaks volumes. I think Yahoo’s big thing was a wish and once they made it come true, they went to sleep happy – then came purpose-driven Google.
Well, I am glad and thankful to say that ToolzDo does have a wish and a purpose and we can articulate both:
Wish: we need to be the place where folks come to keep more cash, reuse and rediscover their neighborhood.”
Purpose: “We need to help neighbors reconnect in a practical way to build stronger local communities.”
Which statement do you think is the most expandable and has the greatest potential of leading us to success?

I am very pleased with how much better I feel now that I don’t smoke regular cigarettes, and the kids don’t complain about the smell. We can use these in the house, not in the cold garage, where we smoked cigarettes.

Can I make a suggestion? I think youve got a thing reliable here. But what in case you added a couple links to a blog page that backs up what youre stating? Or probably you can give us something to seem at, some thing that would connect what youre expressing to a thing tangible? Just a suggestion.
